My best pal and I live together and want to simplify our space but decision paralysis is hitting hard Does anyone have advice on outsourcing decluttering or finding a system that works?

Decision freeze is the worst when you are staring at piles of stuff. My sister swore that hiring a pro organizer for a day helped them get the ball rolling and set up a simple keep/toss/donate system.

I'd definitely second @Smelly Cat '96's suggestion to hire a professional organizer.
They're really great at helping you make objective decisions without the emotional attachment, which I found can be the biggest hurdle in decluttering!
But if you prefer to do it on your own, I know this four box method.
You simply prepare a box for items you want to keep, donate, toss, and relocate!
Let me know if you give it a try and good luck!

Awesome advice! I totally agree, dealing with emotional attachment can be tough. I'm really a fan of that four box method too, it's super simple but works like a charm. Have you had a chance to give it a shot yourself yet?

Wonderful suggestions. You're right that the emotional attachment to our stuff is a big hurdle for us. Hiring someone to help us get the ball rolling is something we'll look into. Also, that four box method seems like a great way to break our gridlock. It's a simple plan we can put into action right away.

Getting started's often the most challenging part of the process. You'll be amazed at how much weight feels like it's been lifted off your shoulders once you get a little momentum. Wishing you and your best pal the best on your project.

Just wanted to drop an update for everyone who gave us a nudge. That four-box method was just what we needed to break the gridlock, and you were on target about the weight being lifted once you got going. The living room is a whole new world and we're looking at the last pile of donation bags to haul out this long weekend.

I'm so happy to hear that the four-box method was a success for you. There's definitely something powerful about the momentum that comes from decluttering. It's amazing how that lifted weight can make it easier to keep going. Congrats on transforming your living room!

Thanks so much for the encouraging words @white5pacehome, nice to see this thread's still going. Your comment almost exactly mirrors what another member predicted we would feel and it's amazing how accurate you both were. We took a break after finishing the living room to enjoy the clear space but now we're getting ready to start the next phase of our project. I'm wondering if anyone has found the four-box method to be as effective in a kitchen, where the items are more about utility than emotional attachment? We're planning to start on the kitchen cabinets and pantry over the next few weekends as our fall project.
