Decluttering as a cultural practice

Can decluttering, or often framed as self-care and a way to boost wellbeing also support sustainable consumption? Or does it risk fueling a throwaway culture and faster buying habits?

Decluttering can help you form good habits if done thoughtfully, making you consider your purchases. But if it just means quick disposal and replacement, it could encourage wastefulness.

What do you do with unwanted items? Do you buy less after decluttering? These actions really determine the impact.

It can go both ways, really. On one hand, it encourages people to rethink what they really need, potentially cutting down on unnecessary purchases and extending the life of what they already own which aligns with sustainable consumption. On the other hand, if decluttering is framed purely as out with the old, in with the new, it can feed a throwaway mindset, pushing faster buying cycles and more waste
